So this week Sarah got her Bat Mitzvah date - August 14, 2010. Oh lordy lordy my head is spinning.
- I am old. (I knew it before, but now I have a daughter who will technically become a woman, and everyone else will know I'm old)
- I have to give a party for 150 people. Or 100. Or whoever shows up. (what if nobody shows up?!)
- I have to plan said party. And other related events. We have to pay for this party. Blar.
What if my alarm breaks and we forget to wake up for the Bat Mitzvah? What if I cry through the whole thing and miss it? What if the videographer hits the wrong button and erases the whole tape?
Of course, partly this panic is being brought on because we just got back from my friend Melissa's daughter's Bat Mitzvah last week in Boston and I got to see birds-eye style what this all entails. Melissa had it all under complete control and the events were not only fun, but flawless, and she didn't miss a trick. She made chocolate and peppermint bark. She made individual bookmarks for people to take home. Her family and her in-laws all participated in the service and the party hosting. She successfully avoided family political disasters. She survived teenage angst and some -ahem- teenage physical changes. She had a bathroom leak and just let it roll right off.
I'll have what she's having. (seriously)

One week earlier and she could've had my speech. Oh well, Parasha Shoftim for her. Wah wah wahhhh...
You are needlessly panicking, ye of the daquiri machines and tie-dying and hula skirts. You throw a good party. And Sarah will be fine. We can't wait!
Does my needless panic shock you in any way? No. This is the result of the mishigas of the eldest daughter of...
Believe me, I'm already planning Zac's for November 2016!
Thanks for all the kind words, Shel. I'm so glad you enjoyed the event! I'll let you in on a little secret. It wasn't perfect...but it was still perfect, if that makes sense! Don't sweat the little stuff. As long as you have some food for people and your child knows her stuff, the rest is ancillary. Things can...and will...go wrong, but in the end, the day will be a great celebration filled with people who are meaningful to you and Sarah. You are capable and organized and creative and I have no doubt that Sarah's bat mitzvah will be truly wonderful. I have the date in my calendar!
Love,
Melissa
Here's a follow-up...we went to a bar mitzvah today...marathon hora...one of the best ever...the bar mitzvah boy, his sister and dad got lifted in the chairs...later in the event...they ran the hora...and chair lifting again! Our only guess is either the photographer or videographer had issues with their equipment..in other words, even THAT can be fixed! Panic not!
Melissa
I'm kind of over the panic. I still think it's awfully grown up to be throwing a bnai mitzvah, but I suppose I have to grow up SOMEtime.
It's kinda grown up...kinda not...I don't feel grown up...just poorer...and richer! Does that make sense?
